What is mineral makeup?

Mineral makeup, in its purest form, is makeup that comes directly from the minerals of earth. However, it isn't just the minerals that make the makeup unique; the process through which the minerals are finely ground is just as important, because it is the light, airy 'feel' of a good mineral makeup, its amazing covering power and the fact that it doesn't clog pores that make it the most popular cosmetic of all time.

Mineral makeup can come in variety forms of makeup such as - foundations, blushers, bronzers, eyeshadows, lipsticks, lipgloss, lip pencils, mascaras.

Genuine mineral makeup products are free from preservatives, artificial colours, talc, oil, fragrances and other skin irritants.  They don't use fillers or binders and are virtually weightless.  Such products remain true to the original concept of providing natural makeup while managing to provide adjustable coverage from light to full.

Why is mineral makeup better for the skin?

Almost all traditional cosmetics contain chemicals and harmful ingredients.  Read the ingredients label of any conventional foundation or powder and you will find a long list of ingredients, some of which you can't even pronounce! Most of the ingredients are petroleum-derived chemicals. Some of these ingredients, such as talc and mineral oil, are even harmful to your skin and your general health in the long run. Other ingredients, such as perfumes, oils, fragrances and dyes can irritate very sensitive skin.

Pure mineral makeup is believed to be better for all types of skin – especially sensitive skin, skin that is prone to acne, and skin that is typically reacts allergically to cosmetics – because it doesn’t contain the oils, artificial colours, chemicals or preservatives that typically dry out or irritate skin.

Also, mineral makeup is known as “non-comedogenic”, meaning it does not clog skin pores. And the presence of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, the key ingredients in most mineral makeup have the benefits of providing a natural protection from the ultra-violet rays.  Zinc oxide also possesses anti-bacterial and inflammation reducing properties that are useful for combating acne.

Is Mineral Makeup safe for all skin types?

It is important to know that anyone can be allergic or sensitive to anything.  However, our product is free from the known sensitisers such as fragrance, dyes and synthetic preservatives which are the top 3 sensitiser.

Does mineral makeup have an expriration date?

Minerals do not have an expiration date, even though they do not contain preservatives. Mineral cosmetics are made from inorganic ingredients that do not support microbial growth.

However, it is important to clean the application brushes on a regular basis. Although the mineral powder product may be free from bacteria, the makeup brush can be a breeding ground!  It is strongly recommended to wash the application brushes at least every 3 to 4 weeks and more often if there are severe acne, a cold or sinus issues.

Ingredients

The ingredients in genuine mineral makeup such as foundation, blush, eyeshadow, etc. occur in nature; they are free from preservatives, artificial colours, talc, oil and other skin irritants. Most standard makeup contains artificial dyes to give it colour. The colours in mineral cosmetics are due to natural pigments instead. These actually benefit the skin, meaning that you can even sleep in it and not harm your skin. Obviously we do recommend removing makeup before the bedtime!

Anti-inflammatory

Mineral cosmetics are beneficial for people that have problematic skin. This includes skin with rosacea, acne or post-surgical skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties. The natural ingredients make it gentle for problem skin. Also, mineral makeup is less likely to become contaminated because it doesn't support bacteria like other makeup does.

Sun Protection

Mineral cosmetics are often recommended by dermatologists because Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide provide natural protection from the sun. In addition, mineral cosmetics contain ingredients that absorb heat. The iron oxides in mineral cosmetics protect the skin from cancer and aging by protecting it from UVA and UVB harmful rays. Standard cosmetics don't contain this kind of protection. If makeup contains sunscreen, it is a chemical sunscreen that can irritate the skin, especially sensitive skin.

Ingredients to watch out for:

A number of mineral cosmetic brands have opted NOT to remain true to the purity of earth minerals.  They choose to add oil, talc, fillers, colours, binders, preservatives, or other chemical additives to their formulas.

Some mineral makeup brands do in fact contain bismuth oxycholoride.  Supposedly the amounts are so small that those companies can legitimately continue to claim its products are "100% minerals", but the use of the lead and copper by-product, not always listed on product labels, certainly can be construed as misleading.  Here are some ingredients to watch out for:

Bismuth-Oxychloride- This man-made mineral can be found in some popular mineral makeup brands! In general, this is a by-product of refined lead and copper. It has a pearlescent property to increase whiteness/shininess to mineral makeup. As pointed, some expensive mineral makeup brands use this ingredient is cheap to buy, making it an inexpensive filler. Sufferers of acne and rosacea will find that using products containing this ingredient will irritate their skin.
Nanonized Titanium Dioxide or nanonized particles - Titanium Dioxide is a natural mineral and safe to use on the skin. The particles are not small enough to be absorbed by the skin. Some mineral makeup brands however, use nanonized titanium dioxide. This process using nano-technology breaks down the particles so much that it can be absorbed by the blood stream. When absorbed, these particles become toxic and pathogenic.

Methylparaben-This is a non-natural preservative. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylparaben for more info.

Trisodium EDTA- This is a non-natural preservative, including methyparaben, propylparaben and diasolidinyl urea.

Talc - It is a non-natural cheap filler used in mineral makeup.

Tips & Tricks

Foundations

  •  Mix 2 shades together to custom blend your foundation.
  •  Using multiple shades you can create a whole different look: Close set eyes, apply a lighter shade between your eyes to give the appearance of wider set eyes and vise verse.
  •  Create a tinted moisturiser by adding some of your foundation mix to your moisturiser. This will also help fill in large pores.
  •  Our foundation can be applied wet or dry.  By using a dampened flocked sponge or moist taklon brush, you can apply you mineral foundation with the wet method.
  •  If you have larger pores, mix some of your foundation with your moisturiser to help fill them in, then apply your foundation as normal.

Eyeshadow

  •  Using a shade that contrasts with your eye colour will make the eye “pop” or stand out. If you match your eye color, it will cancel out the look and colour of your eyes.
  •  You can layer the Eyeshadows from the lightest hue to the deepest shade you desire. You control the depth of the shade.
  •  Pure mineral eyeshadows can be applied wet for a very dramatic look or dry for a softer natural look.
  •  Pure mineral eyeshadow can multi-task too!
  •   Use a fine brush to apply as a eyeliner (wet or dry).
  • Dip the end of a Lip Balm in them to create your own custom lip gloss or lip shade. This can be done with blush shades too!
  • Mix shades together to create your very own custom eye colour.
  • Mix a little natural coloured eyeshadow powder with your body lotion to add some sparkle and shine to your skin.

Blush

  • Smile! See those apples? Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks, sweep along the cheekbone to the hairline. This prevents you from getting your blush too low!
  • Apply blush to cheeks, forehead, chin and tip of your nose, (lightly) to create a “sun kissed” look.
  • Use your blush shade as a lip colour. Dip a Lip Balm into your blush, again lightly (a little goes a long way) and apply to your lips!
  • Pure mineral blush are are very highly pigmented and only a few grains are needed to see great colour.  Use a light hand when applying.  To lighten a blush shade once it is applied, either go over it with a light layer of foundation or before application mix a little of finishing powder with it to tone down the intensity.

Prime (Veil), Conceal and Correct

  • Using Prime on eyelids will help keep your eyeshadow in place all day long
  • Concealer is a great shadow primer as well as a concealing tool.
  • To cover "hard to cover" blemishes, use Conceal & Correct powder and a firm brush to stipple the blemish, then apply foundation to blend.
  • Use Conceal & Correct powder under the eye area to conceal dark circles.  Yes, you will look like a reverse raccoon, but once you have concealed apply your foundation going over the area to blend the colors.  This will also brighten the eyes.
